BPM Toolcraft was established in 1985 by Henry Cresswell and his son Steven.Ā
Henry was a mechanical engineer in the Royal Airforce and immigrated to South Africa in 1976. After noticing a lack of specialist tool stores in SA, Henry found an old rental space in the Blackburns' pharmacy building in Cape Town and opened BPM Distributors ā a specialist tool shop that stocked quality power tools and hardware accessories.Ā
But aside from retailing tools, BPM Distributors became well known amongst industry professionals for providing expert advice and a wide range of industrial power tools.Ā
After 5-years of growth, Henry and Steven committed to buying the building next door and, in 2004, expanded the shop by combining two building units under one roof.
The larger tool shop allowed a more extensive range of power tools to be stocked and displayed, including Festool, Makita, Metabo, Bosch, and Hitachi (now Hikoki).Ā
At the start of 2009, Steven was diagnosed with Leukaemia, and after a courageous battle, he passed away in August of that year. His wife, Alison, took over the store's running and has since grown the business to 25 employees ā many of which are former contractors and industry professionals.Ā
In 2016, BPM Toolcraft launched an online sales division and quickly became the largest online power tool supplier and wholesaler in South Africa.Ā
The shop expanded again in 2017, opting for larger premises at 95 Victoria Road, where a greater variety of tools could be showcased.Ā
Throughout its multi-decade history, Toolcraft has been driven by Henry's original vision: To be South Africa's go-to specialist tool shop for industry professionals seeking expert advice, a wide variety of tool solutions, and a hardware partner who understands the importance of prompt service and reliable backup.Ā
By remaining dedicated to these principles, Toolcraft has grown from a 2-man business into a world-class tool store with more than 120 years of combined industry experience and a team that learns from our customers as much as we aim to advise them.
